  1. A sawfly is any of several families of 
  2. insects of the order Hymenoptera, related to 
  3. bees, wasps, and ants, but lacking a `waist' 
  4. on the body. The egg-laying tube (ovipositor) 
  5. of the female is surrounded by a pair of 
  6. sawlike organs, which it uses to make a slit 
  7. in a plant stem to lay its eggs.
